Black Salt and Pepper Cowhide Rug

This rug is a salt-and-pepper natural cowhide in black. The design is easy to live with: enough detail to hold interest, not so much that it dictates the rest of the room.

Each hide is naturally unique in marking and shading, so no two pieces are identical; shake it out and wipe with a damp cloth rather than washing.

Choose the size so the front legs of your seating sit on the rug in a living room, or so 18 to 24 inches of rug shows beyond the mattress in a bedroom.

Care is simple: vacuum without a beater bar, rotate twice a year for even wear, and blot spills rather than rubbing. Handmade rugs vary slightly in size and shade from piece to piece.
